Retail Roundup: AmRhein’s celebrates 90 years of business, Shoppes at West Village growing

What began as a jewelry store in downtown Roanoke 1921 has grown into a family business with two jewelry stores, a bridal and formal store and a winery.

AmRhein’s celebrates its 90th anniversary this month. The founder’s grandson, Russ Amrhein, operates the Bent Mountain winery, while Russ’ son, Chad, is head of the retail division.

The store is marking its anniversary with a new website, a new logo, a new tagline (“Memories Begin Here”) a new facade and signage at one store, new jewelry lines and new packaging.

Read more about the history of the family business in Sunday’s Retail Roundup column.

The Shoppes at West Village is growing. Not only did the outdoor shopping center add three new stores this year (Chocolate Paper, Polished by Claire V., and soon,  an olive oil and vinegar store), but owner Lew Jamison said he has plans to build two addition buildings to house retail, service establishments and offices.

Equipment is clearing the land now to make way for the buildings. Jamison said construction on those buildings would begin when the existing storefronts were 70 percent occupied. He wouldn’t give the current occupancy rate, but said the shopping center is close to the 70 percent mark.

Note – Oliveto, has moved into Plantagenet Rose’s  former space following their move to a large space in Salem, Va.

Plantagenet Rose moves primary operation to South College in Salem

Plantagenet Rose, formerly at West Village in southwest Roanoke County, opened its new location at 16 South College Avenue in Salem on Tuesday, September 6, just in time for Olde Salem Days and the upcoming fall holiday seasons

It’s a boutique selling gift items and home decor from local and regional artists as well as national vendors like Demdaco and Kelly Ray Roberts. Local artists include Patricia Plaucona, Caroll Yopp of Rocky Mount, Amy Cahill from Lynchburg, purses and bags by Annie’s Baggage in Floyd, and Stella Jewelry by Roxy Broom of Salem.

There are even a few secondhand and antique items for sale whenever owner Gwenda Kellett sees something pretty and “not cheap, but value for money.” Kellett also offers full interior decorating services and silk floral arrangement.

At the store, Kellett is also planning on hosting social media seminars for artists who need to learn to market themselves at her store as part of her work with Southwest Virginia Artists.

Plantagenet Rose’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The West Village location will be open on an appointment-only basis through the foreseeable future.

Retail Roundup: up date Target planning upgrade to Roanoke store The Roanoke Department of Planning, Building and Development has approved Target’s building permit to upgrade the store. end update

The big news out of Sunday’s column is that Target appears to be in the beginning stages of a nearly $1 million upgrade at the Roanoke store.

That’s according to an application for a building permit filed in Roanoke.

The upgrades include remodeling the store’s food service area near the entrance, renovating the fitting rooms, adding more coolers and freezers to the grocery area, putting down new flooring and refreshing decor.

Further details weren’t available, because although Target has applied for a city permit to do the work, the company isn’t ready to disclose its plans. A spokeswoman said there were no plans to renovate the store this year, and next year’s renovation plans haven’t been announced.

In other retail news, Plantagenet Rose recently opened a 2,000-square-foot store at 16 S. College Ave. Their West Village store will remain open by appointment. Unless the economy and business improve, it will close when the lease at West Village runs out next year, owner Gwenda Kellett said.

And, I rounded up a few details on Froth, the coffee shop that’s opening at The Forum in Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea’s former location.

Polished by Claire V. opens store, plans new spa in southwest Roanoke County (with photos)

The owner of Polished by Claire V. has opened a store at The Shoppes at West Village in Southwest Roanoke County and has plans to open a full service spa there early next year.

Unlike the downtown Polished, which offers manicures, pedicures, massages and waxing, the Roanoke County store is exclusively retail. It sells Bare Minerals makeup, Claire V. handbags, jewelery, Polished brand nail polish and more. The store opened this week.

Owner Laura Godfrey told me she wanted to establish a presence at the shopping center before the holidays and that she hopes to open a full spa in a vacant space next to Paper Chocolate by March.

The retail store, next to Frame Connection, is in the the space where makeup boutique and hair salon Kira Kira was located until it closed this summer.
